AYES. QUEJÍO (2018)
Museo del Baile Flamenco - Spain

Acrylic on canvas, 76x102cm
Mercedes de Mata is an artist from Seville with a curious and groundbreaking spirit, having a multifaceted background. Her artistic search is defined by the word freedom: she is free in her expression and in her search for concepts. Her project on flamenco art under the title “Inasible” has traces of Spanish history, noir novel and jazz; it shows dissertations on the aesthetics and dialogues between the past and the present of an art that not only includes music, song and dance, but extends to the interior of the human being transmitting strength, pain, tears, ecstasy, joy, and all the expressive manifestations of this. The core of her work is based on the colors red and black, expressions of passion and flamenco sorrow. Her artistic technique uses different materials, such as roller, brush, spray, paper or canvas.
This work is inspired by the following literature excerpt:
The night, tho’ clear, shall frown—
And the stars shall look not down
From their high thrones in the heaven,
With light like Hope to mortals given—
But their red orbs, without beam,
To thy weariness shall seem
As a burning and a fever
Which would cling to thee for ever.
